New invention: Piper sarmentosum as a therapeutic agent to prevent fractures and accelerate fracture healing

Group of inventors from Malaysia presented at the Brussels Innova Invention Fair 2013 the invention: Piper sarmentosum as a therapeutic agent to prevent fractures and accelerate fracture healing.

The invention consists of using piper sarmentosum’s leaf extract which contains high levels of flavonoid compound, naringenin, which is a natural antioxidant with superoxide scavenging activity which may help the endogenous antioxidant defense system protect the bone against osteoporosis. The results from the studies showed that its antioxidant properties help in accelerating fracture healing in oestrogen-reficient rats. Piper sarmentosum extract was also found to reduce the expression and increase the activity of 11β-HSD1 dehydrogenase activity in bone which will in turn reduce the local concentration of active glucocorticoids. The toxicity studies had proven that piper sarmentosum is not toxic at the effective dose used in the study.

This invention has a potential for broad international application, because as a medication which derives from local herbs it is much cheaper and with fewer side effects and can be further developed as an alternative medicine for osteoporotic patients.

The inventors are interested in commercialization of their invention and are seeking appropriate interested manufacturer.
