New Invention: Numerical Endotracheal Tube

Inventors from Saudi Arabia presented at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2014 the invention: “Numerical Endotracheal Tube”.

Endotracheal tubes (ETT) are used to assist ventilating patients with respiratory failure or those who are under general anesthesia for surgical procedures. ETT placement and level can be check in ICU by performing Chest X-Ray (CXR) and checking the radiopaque line on the ETT that will show on CXR and help to identify the level of the ETT. However, this line may not be able to identify the most proper level that can be documented in the patient chart.

The proposed idea is to label the ETT with radiopaque numbers starting from the proximal side of the patient and using centimeter scale. This will identify the proper level of the ETT which can be documented in the patient chart for daily check in case there‘s any tube displacement. This is especially valuable in case of accidental removal of the ETT and the need for emergent re–intubation. In this case, the proper level has been already identified and documented.

This invention has potential for broad international application for patients who require endotracheal intubation, especially those who will need it for more than one day. This will improve patient safety and quality of health care.
