New invention: Antimicrobial collagen wound dressing

Group of inventors from Romania and Turkey have presented at the Innova Brussels Invention Fair 2013 their invention: „ Antimicrobial collagen wound dressing”.

Short description

The invention relates to a natural biomaterial consisting of a polymer – type 1 fibrilar collagen, a tribomechanically activated zeolite (clinoptiolite) and an Origanum syracium L. var bevanli or Thymbra spicata L. essential oil and to a process for preparing the same. All the natural components are cross-linked and than lyophilized to obtain a 3Dspongious wound dressing. The obtained natural dressing is used for treating bactthe skin infections produced by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.

Novelty

The novelty of this invention is obtaining natural biomaterials with intelligent properties for controlled release of antibacterial essential oils and controlled antimicrobial activity with applications in medicine, surgery and cosmetic. All the three natural components act for healing the infected would thus: tissue regeneration due to collagen , ph balance of damaged skin due to action ion exchange in zeolite and the treatment of the infections caused by P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria, due to the antibacterial action of essential oils.

Advantages

Natural wound dressing for skin tissue regeneration and treating infections produced by S. aureus and P. aeruginosa,

Reducing the toxic effect of synthetic drugs by using natural components friendly to the human body and environment (collage, natural zeolite and essential oils extracted from plants),

Process according with the invention is simple, applied at room temperature (23-28 degrees Celzius) during maximum 48 hours, with low power consumption and simple equipments , specific for obtaining and characterizing biomaterials.
