New Invention: Fucoxanthin – novel carotenoid from underutilized brown sea weeds for health benefits

One inventor from Malaysia have presented at the IENA Invention Fair 2013 his invention:

Fucoxanthin – novel carotenoid from underutilized brown sea weeds for health benefits”.

Abstract:

Seaweeds are the raw materials for industrial production of agar carrageeman and alginates. They continue to be widely consumed as food in Asian countries. Seaweeds serve as an important source of bioactive natural substances. This study has been successfully conducted to extract, isolate and purify fucoxanthin, a class of carotenoid from the types of Malaysian brown seaweeds, namely Turbinaria. Results showed that apart from possessing antioxidant properties, fucoxanthin remarkably reduced the viability of human colon cancer cell lines. Treatment with fucoxanthin induces DNA fragmentation, indicating apoptosis.
